Overview

Thanks to the efforts of seven visionary social entrepreneurs, the Universidad de la Costa has been a part of the higher education landscape in Barranquilla, Colombia since 1970. Over the last 40 years, the university has been involved in the process of building a region that’s committed to the advancement and development of higher education through comprehensive teaching, leading and training.

At Universidad de la Costa, we offer a stimulating assortment of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, eight of which are accredited programs by the Ministry of Education, demonstrating our commitment to academic excellence.

Although the university’s main language of instruction is Spanish, we also encourage students to learn a foreign language, such as English in order to help with their professional progression after university.

We’re proud to have graduated more than 27,000 well-rounded and confident professionals with an innovative mindset and leadership skills who go on and find employment in various specializations areas which contribute to the sustainable development of the Caribbean region and country.

Our training and research facilities in particular are considered areas of excellence within the university. There are also 37 computer labs, 34 laboratories, six auditoriums, five reading rooms, five art classrooms, as well as six common areas and five wellness centers which offer specialized support. Of our 163 lecture rooms, over half are fully-equipped with audiovisual support.

In order for students to get the best experience possible from their degree, field trips, workshops, academic mentoring, specialized events and academic advisory services are also part of the curricula.

We like to encourage the university community to take part in cultural activities, such as dance, film clubs and jewelry making, as well as various sports clubs and facilities, including swimming, volleyball, taekwondo, soccer and much more.


Located in the center of Barranquilla means there are easy transport links to and from the university’s campus from all over the city. Students will be able to take advantage of the near proximity of shopping and restaurant districts, as well as entertainment and sporting venues.

International students will need to ensure that their high school diploma certificate and bachelor’s degree certificate (if applying for a postgraduate degree program) is recognized and validated by the Ministry of National Education before applying. To help with the admissions process, we have some helpful advice on our website.

Financial funding is also available to expand opportunities for those who may not other have access to higher education. Scholarships can be awarded on several merits, such as academic excellence, sporting excellence, gifted and talented and more. Students may also be given the choice to pay fees in monthly installments.

Please note that scholarships are reviewed and approved annually by the board of directors.
