Established by royal decree in 1792, the University of La Laguna is the oldest academic institution in the Canary Islands. During Spain’s turbulent 19th century, this institution, like most universities in the country, underwent a series of closures and reopenings until, finally, in 1927, it began its current phase, with uninterrupted activity to this day.
The University of La Laguna’s location in one of Europe’s outermost regions – the Canary Islands – has meant that its academic programme has been developed with a broad-based approach, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across all branches of knowledge. This is because, in past decades, this geographical location made it difficult for the inhabitants of the Canary Islands to study on the Spanish mainland, making it necessary to provide a wide-ranging academic programme.
Since 2025, the university has been analysing and restructuring its academic programmes to introduce new teaching models, such as dual degree programmes and micro-credentials. It currently offers 46 bachelor’s degrees, 9 dual degree programmes, 36 master’s degrees and one dual master’s degree, as well as running 23 PhD programmes, numerous professional development postgraduate courses and university extension courses.
The University of La Laguna’s location in the Canary Islands makes it a tricontinental hub, enabling it to maintain teaching and research agreements with institutions in the Americas and North Africa. At European level, it is fully integrated into the European Higher Education Area and forms part of the STARS EU alliance, within the European Universities programme promoted by the European Commission.
In the field of research, it excels in areas such as physics and astrophysics – maintaining close ties with the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics – biology, marine and terrestrial ecology, psychology, education, entrepreneurship and maritime navigation, amongst others.
As a public university, it is an institution committed to regional development, the promotion of equal opportunities, democratic values and inclusion.
