The Inter American University of Puerto Rico,
commonly known as INTER, is a private, nonprofit higher education institution. Reverend John Will Harris founded the institution in 1912, originally as an elementary and secondary school, although the first class to graduate from a Bachelor’s Degree was in 1927.
Not only has INTER, prepared its students in all branches of humanistic, social and scientific knowledge for over 100 years, but it has also served as a bridge between the North American and Latin American cultures.
In 1944, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education accredited INTER, making it the first liberal arts college outside of the continental United States to receive this accreditation, and it has maintained it through the years. The University is comprised of eleven academic units, specifically, nine campuses and two professional schools: the School of Optometry and the School of Law, which are accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE), and the American Bar Association (ABA), respectively.
At the University, it is our mission to offer postsecondary and higher education in the arts and sciences through teaching, investigation, and community service, within an ecumenical context. We also provide educational programs at the pre-school, elementary, and secondary levels.
INTER contributes to society by educating people with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and from all corners of the world, incorporating innovative modes of study backed by information- and telecommunications-based technologies into our academic offerings and services.
We strive to maximize the educational potential of our students in an environment free from discrimination, compliant with the applicable laws, regulations and accreditation standards, and in harmony with the achievement of academic excellence, critical thinking, scientific knowledge, appreciation of the arts, ethical responsibility, and skills in social coexistence.
It is within our goals to provide diversity in the programs and services offered at the undergraduate, graduate, occupational, and professional levels in accordance to the changing needs of the student population and society at large. At the same time, we are committed to ensure that the faculty support, student services, and student activity programs operate with the academic program in a way that promotes the holistic education of the student.
One of INTER’s main objectives is to foster investigation and creative activity in the whole of the academic community in order to enrich the Institution’s educational efforts, increase human comprehension of the environment as well as that of the world as a whole, and generate new knowledge and technology.
At present, INTER has an enrollment of over 40,000 students.
