About Universidad Nacional Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas (UNTRM)

The National University Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza de Amazonas (UNTRM) has grown remarkably in recent years, establishing itself as one of Peru's most innovative public institutions dedicated to scientific research and development. Since its establishment, UNTRM has been recognized for its commitment to scientific research, innovation and social responsibility.

The university is currently led by Rector Jorge Luis Maicelo Quintana, Ph.D., Academic Vice Rector Óscar Andrés Gamarra Torres, Ph.D., and Vice Rector for Research María Nelly Luján Espinoza, Ph.D. Together with the deans of its 11 faculties, they are driving academic excellence in the Amazonas region.

Since its creation in 2000 and the commencement of its academic activities in 2001, UNTRM has reached several significant milestones, including becoming one of the first universities to receive institutional accreditation from SUNEDU in 2017.

The 17-hectare UNTRM university campus is in Chachapoyas and boasts modern infrastructure dedicated to education, research and central administration. In addition to its eleven faculties and over thirty undergraduate professional degree programs in Engineering, Technology, Agriculture, Health, Social Sciences and Business, UNTRM has recently introduced degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence Engineering, Agroecological Engineering and Biosystems Engineering in response to contemporary demands in the country.

At postgraduate level, UNTRM offers six doctoral programs and 18 master's degrees. The Doctorate in Sciences for Sustainable Development scholarships, funded by PROCIENCIA-Peru, are particularly notable, reflecting the university's commitment to training leading sustainability researchers. UNTRM also has 138 faculty members registered with the National Registry of Science, Technology and Technological Innovation (RENACYT), as well as 13 research institutes that promote scientific research in a variety of fields.

In terms of its teaching staff, UNTRM boasts a diverse academic structure. Being a professor at this university is a highly responsible and prestigious role, reflecting a deep commitment to higher education and training future professionals. Our full, associate, and assistant professors contribute to the educational quality and academic prestige of UNTRM, playing a key role in establishing the university's national leadership.

Among the most important achievements of UNTRM is the first somatic cloning of cattle in June 2017, with the birth of the clone Alma C-I, and in 2020, the clones Luzi I and Luzi II. In addition, its scientists discovered the new species of fungus Beauveria peruviensis, a biological control agent for the coffee berry borer. Likewise, five new species of high-altitude papaya were also discovered and published in the journal PLOS ONE.

In 2024, UNTRM successfully cloned the first Peruvian Paso horse. This significant milestone was made possible by a multidisciplinary team comprising research professors and professionals from the Institute for Research in Livestock and Biotechnology (IGBI) at the Faculty of Zootechnical Engineering, Agribusiness and Biotechnology. The team also benefited from the valuable collaboration of its strategic partners. This milestone positions Peru alongside countries that have successfully implemented this technology, including Australia, the US, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Italy and Colombia. It demonstrates UNTRM's ability to compete and collaborate on the international stage, contributing to global advances in the conservation and genetic improvement of animal species.

These achievements reflect the importance of UNTRM's current management in establishing the organization as a center of innovation and academic excellence with a strong focus on research, technology transfer and social responsibility.
