The University Mediterranea of Reggio Calabria (UNIRC acronym), was founded in 1968. It combines a commitment to research and teaching in the six departments: Architecture–dArTe; Heritage-Architecture-Urbanism; Agriculture; Law and Economics; Civil, Energy, Environmental and Material Engineering; Information Engineering, Infrastructures, and Sustainable Energy. The different disciplines and the many teaching and research activities are related to the surrounding territory, with the creation of an “Environmental Polytechnic” with a strong emphasis on the themes of architecture, landscape, urban planning and infrastructure related to the green economy. The Faculty of Law studies the economic issues relating to archaeology and cultural heritage.
