Ulama in Malang. Founded with a dream of creating a prestigious and independent
institution, UNISMA's journey began with the establishment of the Sunan Giri
Foundation on March 27, 1981. Rooted in the principles of Ahlussunnah wal
Jama'ah, a committee of nine Islamic scholars laid the foundation of the
university, and the Faculty of Education (Tarbiyah) became its cornerstone.
This faculty evolved from its early days as the Islamic Education Academy and
later merged with faculties of Agriculture and other disciplines under the
Universitas Islam Malang.
Over the years, UNISMA has grown significantly, officially
recognized by Indonesia's Ministry of Education and Culture in 1983. It has
since expanded to offer a broad spectrum of programs across 10 undergraduate
faculties, including Science, Engineering, Islamic Studies, Medicine,
Economics, Law, Agriculture, and Animal Husbandry, among others. The university
has also established a reputation for excellence in postgraduate education,

more than hundreds international students, and prides itself on its distinguished
faculty. With the prestigious Unggul (Excellent) accreditation from Indonesia's
National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT), and international recognition through
ASIIN and FIBAA accreditation from Germany, UNISMA stands at the forefront of
higher education in Indonesia. The university’s modern facilities, including a
dedicated hospital, laboratories, student dormitories, and sport centers,
further enhance its appeal as a center of learning and research. UNISMA
continues to cultivate an environment where academic excellence, Islamic
values, and community engagement thrive.
