The University of Petroleum and Gas (UPG) of
Ploieşti is a public higher education institution with a 75-year tradition and
remarkable results in Romanian higher education.
The University of Petroleum and Gas of Ploieşti
was initially established as the Institute of Petroleum and Gas (I.P.G.)
Bucharest. The Institute of Petroleum and Gas, a technical higher education
institution with a unique profile in Romania, was established in Bucharest in
1948 and had two faculties in its structure - the Faculty of Drilling and
Production, currently the Faculty of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, and the
Faculty of Crude Oil Processing, currently the Faculty of Petroleum Technology
and Petrochemistry. Between 1950 and 1957, the two faculties were joined by the
Faculty of Petroleum Machinery and Equipment, currently the Faculty of
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, the Faculty of Economics and
Organization of the Petroleum Industry, established in 1950 and which
functioned until 1958, and the Faculty of Technical Geology, established in
1950 under the name of the Faculty of Geology of Oil and Gas Deposits and
expanded as a profile after the transfer in 1957 of the Faculty of Geology from
the Institute of Geology and Mining Technology in Bucharest. As a result of
these structural changes, in 1957 I.P.G. changes its name to the Institute of
Petroleum, Gas and Geology (I.P.G.G.). The changes in political, economic and
social life that occurred in Romania after December 1989 allowed the Institute
of Petroleum and Gas from Ploieşti to rethink its status and to consider that
the 45 years of experience and performance in the field of higher education,
the material base created during this time and, especially, the human potential
at its disposal allow it, while maintaining and continuing to develop the
didactic and scientific traditions of the higher oil school, to broaden its
profile and become a University, a unique center of state higher education in
Prahova, capable of meeting the training needs in several fields of young
people from this area of the country, strongly developed economically. As a
result, in 1992 the Faculty of Letters and Sciences was established, with four
training profiles: economics, philology, mathematics-computer science and
chemistry-physics. Due to the large number of students, in 2002 the Faculty of
Letters and Sciences was reorganized into the Faculty of Economic Sciences and
the Faculty of Letters and Sciences.
In addition to student training, the
Petrol-Gaze University of Ploieşti had special concerns and results in the
field of postgraduate training activities, organizing postgraduate courses,
specializations and doctorates. From the academic year 1993 - 1994, the School
of Postgraduate Studies was established within the University of Ploieşti, with
the specialization "Water Injection", full-time courses lasting 2
years, where teaching was carried out in English by teachers from the
University and from abroad. Also, starting with the academic year 1994 - 1995,
in-depth study programs were organized, full-time courses lasting one year, in
the Chemistry profile, the specializations Modern Technologies in Oil
Processing and Petrochemistry and Catalysis and Catalysts in Oil Processing and
Environmental Protection, in the Mechanical profile, the specializations
Petroleum Equipment for Marine Exploitations, Reliability of Petroleum and
Petrochemical Equipment and Petrochemical and Refinery Equipment, in the
Petroleum profile, the specializations Directed Well Drilling, Reservoir
Engineering, Oil and Gas Extraction and Hydrocarbon Transport and Distribution
Systems, respectively, in the Management field, Management of Economic, Tourist
and Administrative Systems, which functioned until 2010, Public Sector
Management, Management of Microeconomic Systems, in the Business Administration
field, Administration and Financing of Development Projects, Strategies in
International Affairs, in the Accounting field, Accounting, Auditing and
Accounting Expertise, Business Database Systems.
