Systems Engineering and Design (SED) focuses on designing and integrating complex systems. Students learn how to define what a system should do, design how its parts work together and manage tradeoffs across performance, cost, risk and user needs. SED emphasizes big-picture thinking and system-level design. Students study how mechanical, electrical, software and human elements interact over a system’s full lifecycle—from concept and design to testing, deployment and optimization. Graduates are prepared to lead multidisciplinary teams and guide complex systems where coordination and integration are critical.

The curriculum offers flexibility through a secondary field option (both pre-approved and custom types available) while providing a broad background in engineering as a whole, and decision-making that supports overall design. Students can tailor their studies to their interests and career goals in both technical and non-technical areas. 

Career options include health technology, business systems integration and consulting, marketing and product testing, operations and quality control, robotics and manufacturing, energy and environment, finance, and government and public service.
