This dynamic tapestry of diverse perspectives makes UofL a place where potential is unleashed and positive change for humankind is fueled.   UofL enrolls more than 22,000 students and offers undergraduate degrees in more than 50 fields of study, master’s degrees in over 75 areas, and doctoral degrees in over 35 disciplines. The legislative functions of the Graduate School are vested in the Graduate Council, which consists of elected representatives of the Graduate Faculty. The Council establishes minimum guidelines and policies that maintain high standards for administering graduate education at the University of Louisville.  The dean of the Graduate School serves as chair of this body and of the Graduate Faculty.

The dean and the dean's staff are responsible for the administration of the rules and regulations of the Graduate School and are expected to maintain and safeguard the standards and policies of the school as outlined by the Graduate Faculty and the Graduate Council.
Graduate students participate in the operation and decision-making process of the Graduate School through the Graduate Student Association—to which all graduate students belong—and its executive committee, the Graduate Student Council, which consists of one elected representative from each graduate program. A representative of the Graduate Student Council serves as a voting member of the Graduate Council.
Graduate students are actively sought as members of many of the standing committees of the Graduate School, and they are urged to participate and become involved in the administration of the Graduate School through these channels.

University information

The University of Louisville subscribes to a selective admission policy. Admission for freshman applicants is based on:
  • High school grades,
  • ACT or SAT scores, and
  • Successful completion of the required pre-college curriculum.
  • Enrollment in the freshman class is limited. Within the limits of space availability, the University will endeavor to accommodate all eligible applicants. However, the number of freshman applications exceeds the number of spaces available in the entering class. For this reason, the selective and competitive admission requirements may exceed the minimum eligibility requirement.

The University of Louisville’s minimum eligibility admission policy requires any applicant to have graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate, have completed the pre-college curriculum, possess a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, and have achieved at least one of the following:
  • The applicant has earned a composite ACT score of not less than 20 or an SAT-I score of not or less than 940 (CR+M); or
  • The applicant has completed the UofL enhanced pre-college curriculum (PCC) with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. The enhanced PCC consists of an additional two pre-college courses in mathematics, social studies, or science. These two courses may be taken in any combination within the three disciplines. The courses must be at or above the level of prescribed PCC; or
  • The applicant ranks in the top 15% of the applicant’s high school graduating class upon completing seven or eight semesters in high school.
Freshman applicants who do not meet the selection requirements may have their admission decisions deferred. Admission will be offered first to those applicants with the strongest records and offers will continue until the class is filled. Some factors that are considered during this review are: number and scope of college preparatory, honors and AP classes; strength of senior year schedule; and evidence of marked improvement over time in applicant’s academic career. The overriding concern will always be for the student’s potential to be successful in meeting the academic expectations at the University.
Students should refer to the individual academic unit admission policies, included in this catalog, for additional admission requirements. Students should be cautioned about the distinction between undergraduate and graduate classifications when applying for admission to the University. For fee purposes, determination of “undergraduate” or “graduate” is based on the school or enrollment unit to which a student is admitted, and not on the level of courses taken.
Graduate Admissions It is the applicant's responsibility to consult the appropriate department, school or program for application deadlines and specific program requirements. The university reserves the right to change programs of study, academic requirements, tuition and fees, schedule of courses, the announced academic calendar and deadlines without prior notice.

Student life

Through various boards, committees, and staff, the Office of Student Involvement provides cultural, social, and recreational programs, aiming to partner the out-of-class experience with the academic experience. Achieving a sense of community and loyalty to the University are the outcomes we seek. Our offerings support development of marketable skills to be carried into the work force after graduation.

Student Organizations The University of Louisville hosts over 400 student organizations covering a wide variety of student interests. These groups provide a wonderful opportunity to become involved in campus life and to connect with other students on campus.
Student Involvement oversees all Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) on campus and assists with the formation of new groups, leadership training, new member intake and the planning of numerous campus events. The staff is available to consult with individuals and organizations to help them succeed and get involved.
Club Programming Committee (CPC) The Club Programming Committee is a joint initiative designed and developed by the Student Government Association and the Dean of Students Office. Support for the managing of the program is provided by Student Involvement.  SGA has made significant funding available for student organizations to request.
These funds are intended to afford Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs) the opportunity to contribute to the quality of campus life by sponsoring events that may not be possible without this financial assistance.  Requests should demonstrate how funding an initiative would inspire a vibrant campus life and an engaged student body.  Every request received will be reviewed by the CPC on a case-by-case basis.  CPC is composed primarily of students who will decide what requests best support student life and therefore should receive funding.  The Dean of Students Office and SGA each appoint four individuals to serve on the CPC.
