About University of Namur

Founded in 1831 by Jesuits, the UNamur is built on their core value of openness, excellence, freedom and sustainability. The human has always been at the centre of its preoccupations and occupies the main place in its three missions that are teaching, doing research and being a responsible and active actor of its region.

Situated in the French-speaking part of Belgium, at the centre of Europe, the University has built strong partnerships and international networks around the world over the years. Its interdisciplinary approach and its famous research have made it known internationally and have helped attract lots of international researchers, students and professors.

Counting 6 different faculties and offering 70 different bachelor and master programs in a large range of topics, the University welcomes about 7500 students and 300 PhD every year. Promoting scientific research which combines excellence with a long-term vision, the University hosts 11 Research Institutes and 9 technological platforms. Moreover, research is used to offer the best possible education to the students as the professors are researchers themselves. They develop fundamental and applied research projects in partnership with Belgian and international universities, research centers and companies. Faithful to the University’s Jesuit tradition, the teaching staff provides personalized support for each student, facilitating not only the acquisition of knowledge, but also their personal development and fulfilment.

Striving to be a role model in society and a strong partner in its region, the University has built partnerships with local private and public institutions and usinesses. It promotes its research proposing the transfer of its technological developments to industry, for licensing or spin-offs. It contributes to the social and economic development of its region.

On the other hand, wishing to increase development cooperation, the University of Namur promotes research collaborations with universities and researchers in Africa, Latin America, South-East Asia and offers scholarships to Master and PhD students from the global south.

Moreover, it has also developed strong partnerships with universities from America and Europe as well.

Willing to be an actor and an example on the questions of sustainability, the University has taken several actions over the years to make its campus greener and to increase awareness of its staff and students on the current challenges that trigger our society today.
