About University of Pecs

Since King Louis the Great founded the first Hungarian University in Pécs in 1367, the city has played a vital role as an educational center for both Hungary and the surrounding region, with longer and shorter interruptions.

With its 25,000 students and 500 different study programs, the University of Pécs (UP), the oldest university in Hungary, is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the country. The university’s academic staff is highly qualified, ensuring that students receive the most current and advanced knowledge at internationally recognized standards. As a result, graduates earn degrees that are highly competitive in today’s labor market.

For over 40 years, the University of Pécs has been offering degree programs in English, making it one of the most internationalized universities in Hungary. Today UP offers a broad palette of 100+ programs taught in English and German that cover almost every aspect of modern academia, from medicine, natural sciences, engineering, art, and political science to law, business, and economics. The institution proudly hosts more than 5,700 international students from 146 different countries, fostering a diverse and vibrant academic community.

Research and Education

Functioning as a knowledge center for innovation in the South Transdanubian Region, the University of Pécs employs over 2,400 teaching and research staff members who actively participate in research projects across its 10 faculties. Additionally, the university offers 21 doctoral schools, offering PhD and DLA degrees across a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines.

Due to the successful implementation of the Bologna education system, students can get involved in a dynamic, interoperable European higher education system. Instead of taking traditional college and university courses, students first earn an undergraduate degree (BA or BSc), and then a Master's degree (MA or MSc). Those students who decide to dedicate more years to science may also apply for doctoral training (PhD or DLA).

Since the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was introduced in September 2003, credits and degrees earned in Hungary are transferable to other European institutions and vice versa. In addition to the diploma, students are also provided with a special supplement recognized throughout the European Union.

To ensure high international standards, strict quality control measures are applied. The Hungarian Accreditation Committee (HAC) conducts continuous institutional and program accreditation procedures and monitors the quality of educational activities to

ensure compliance with the European Standards and Guidelines. Hungarian higher education institutions and courses are accredited by HAC.

The city of Pécs

Pécs has been an important cultural and educational center since the Roman era, proud of its diverse past and present.

Memories of bygone millennia shape the city's unique atmosphere. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Early Christian Necropolis is only a few minutes’ walk away from the mosque, a memento of the Ottoman era, all encircled by the longest continuous medieval castle wall of Central Europe

Pécs has always hosted a diverse population, one proud of its different languages, religions, and cultures. The populous Croatian and German nationalities, in particular, have played an important role in the city’s past and present alike. As such, the city has become a melting pot of cultures and earned itself the nickname “the borderless city”.
