Postgraduate education is an important component of the University?s research strategy. Of a total of 38 635 registered students in 2007, 27% were postgraduate students. Of these 40% were students of colour and 2 500 were international students. In 2006 a total of 1 195 master?s and 148 doctoral students graduated from the University of Pretoria. These students gain experience by means of the research projects that they undertake and contribute considerably to the University?s status as a research university. UP offers nearly 1 500 post-graduate programmes in various disciplines. Short courses are also availabe through Continuing Education at University of Pretoria (www.ceatup.co.za)
