About University of Tsukuba

The University of Tsukuba was established in October 1973 and is one of Japan’s leading comprehensive universities. Three Nobel Prize laureates have served as President or as members of the academic staff¹. Although the University of Tsukuba is relatively new, it in fact possesses a long and distinguished history within the Japanese higher education system, with its origins dating back to the Meiji era, when the country began its modernisation. It traces its roots to the Normal School founded in 1872 as Japan’s first teacher training institution (later becoming Tokyo Higher Normal School), and subsequently to the Tokyo University of Education established in 1949. The present University of Tsukuba was relocated in 1973 to Tsukuba Science City, approximately 60 km north-east of Tokyo.

The Tsukuba Campus, which serves as the University’s main campus, is surrounded by beautiful natural scenery while offering excellent access to Tokyo by rail and other transportation. The Tokyo Campus, inherited from the former Tokyo University of Education, is located in the heart of the city and functions as a graduate school designed for working professionals, with classes concentrated on weekday evenings and Saturdays².

The founders of the University of Tsukuba aspired to create a new type of university at a time when the Japanese academic world was reluctant to break down disciplinary boundaries. For this reason, since its establishment, the university has continued to be a pioneer in Japanese higher education reform. Its academic and research structures were designed to enable interdisciplinary study and collaboration. In addition, Japan’s first evening graduate programmes for working professionals were launched in fields such as law and international business. The university offers degree programmes that can be completed entirely in English³, including this MBA programme⁴, and has concluded international exchange agreements with countries and regions numbering just under seventy⁵, while also establishing numerous overseas offices to promote international collaboration in education and research. In September 2024, it established a degree-conferring campus in Malaysia⁶, becoming the first Japanese university to set up an undergraduate faculty organisation overseas.

In addition to academic excellence, the University of Tsukuba is highly regarded for its achievements in sport ⁷. In the field of sports science, the university not only conducts research but has also produced many graduates who have excelled worldwide as Olympic medallists⁸ and professional athletes. Even after retiring from active competition, they continue to demonstrate their abilities in leadership roles such as executive directors and chairpersons of global organisations, making significant contributions to the world of sport.

The university has grown alongside the development of Tsukuba Science City. This science city is internationally known for hosting many major research institutions, including the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the High Energy Accelerator Research  Organisation  (KEK). The name “Tsukuba” has earned high international recognition through numerous research achievements.

At present, the University of Tsukuba, as the core body of the Tsukuba Global Innovation Promotion Agency⁹, fosters collaboration among the various schemes, programmes, and partner organisations located within the Tsukuba Science City, promotes the exchange of talent, and advances the development of the foundations for the city’s growth.

Living Costs

If students rent a typical apartment near the university, it would cost between 30,000 and 50,000 yen per month, but students can still enjoy university life at about half of what it would cost to rent an apartment in a big city like Tokyo.

Scholarships

Selecting the right scholarship can be a daunting process. With countless options available, students often find themselves overwhelmed and confused. The decision can be especially stressful for those facing financial constraints or pursuing specific academic or career goals.
