The program prepares students to be broadly knowledgeable about the world of English and American Literature, to develop expertise in a specific scholarly focus sufficient to teach at the college or university level, and to possess the necessary research and communication skills to continue to learn about and be active participants in literary studies. Students should be prepared for a range of entry level positions in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors, especially for an assistant professor or lecturer position in a college or university program. Learning Outcomes: Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in British and American Literature or American Studies should be able to identify important issues raised by the works of a particular writer, the cultural productions of a particular historical moment, a generic or thematic tradition, or some other meaningful configuration of texts. Students should also be able to advance the critical conversation surrounding the topic on which they focus. Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in British and American Literature or American Studies should be able to demonstrate their ability to apply fundamental ideas about literary genres, themes, styles, historical periods, and cultural contexts to the literary problems or works they choose to examine. Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in British and American Literature or American Studies should be able to demonstrate their ability to pursue independent research, using the technological and archival resources available to literary scholars; they should be able to incorporate or, where necessary, challenge previous research in their chosen field. Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in British and American Literature or American Studies should be able to demonstrate an understanding of major theoretical perspectives and, more particularly, of the way these perspectives may bear upon their own field of inquiry. Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in British and American Literature or American Studies should be able to present the conclusions of their research or critical investigations in both written and oral form, using clear, precise language.
