Program Purpose The program provides extensive training in sociological theory as well as quantitative and qualitative methodologies to equip doctoral students with strong research and teaching skills. Two major areas of sociological inquiry are emphasized: global & comparative sociology and population & health studies. The program encourages interdisciplinary work. Students will be prepared for a wide range of research, government, policy, or industry positions with strong critical thinking, analytical, communication, and teamwork skills. The Department of Sociology only admits students to the Ph.D. degree program; students are not admitted to an MA or MS degree program. Learning Outcomes 1. Students will gain working knowledge of the main theories and debates within sociology, the principles of social science, research design and data analysis. 2. Students will gain the ability to synthesize state-of-the-art theory and research in their chosen areas of interest.
