About University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest

The University of Veterinary Medicine in Budapest, often described as “Little Paris of Middle Europe,” is one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world!

  • Over 230 years of tradition in veterinary education.
  • More than 30 years of experience in teaching international students.
  • A truly international veterinary university – students from 50 countries (67% international students, 33% Hungarian students).
  • European degree—EAEVE accreditation: The degree received at UVMB is automatically accepted by the member countries of the European Union and in several other countries worldwide.

This European-standard university still operates on a small scale. It enrolls only a limited number of students each year, preserving high academic values while maintaining a family atmosphere in the historical campus in the middle of Budapest. The predecessor of the current university was established in 1787 as the Chair of Animal Healing at the Faculty of Medicine of the Budapest University shortly after the foundation of the first veterinary school in the world (in Lyon in 1762). After a number of transitional statuses, the institution has finally been given an independent university rank and earned an outstanding international reputation.

In the 1990's a Field Station and Large Animal's Clinic was built outside Budapest providing a bigger supply of horses and cattle for the students in the clinical years. Since the foundation of the international programs in 1989 around 2500 international students were enrolled.

It is accredited to issue the diplomas of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.), Bachelor of Science (BSc), and Master of Science (MSc)  in Biology, and the postgraduate degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) in veterinary sciences. The university also has a fundamental role in teaching the undivided (one-tier) course in zoology. The University has an uninterrupted teaching record for more than two centuries, making it one of the oldest veterinary schools in the world.
