Uzbekistan State World Languages University

Uzbekistan State World Languages University (UzSWLU) was established in 1949 as the Tashkent State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. With more than seven decades of academic excellence, the university has developed into one of the leading higher education institutions in Uzbekistan, specializing in foreign languages, linguistics, and interdisciplinary studies.

Following the independence of Uzbekistan, the institution underwent a major transformation and was officially reorganized as Uzbekistan State World Languages University in 1992, reflecting its expanded academic scope and strong international orientation.

Today, UzSWLU provides high-quality education to more than 19,000 students, offering a wide range of academic programmes aligned with national priorities and international standards. The university delivers 26 undergraduate programmes and 19 master’s specializations, based on modern pedagogical approaches and the national qualifications framework.

In addition to its traditional strengths in philology, linguistics, and translation studies, the university has significantly expanded its academic portfolio to include International Relations, Social Sciences, Political Science, Computer Linguistics, and Information Services and Public Relations. UzSWLU currently comprises nine faculties and 47 departments, which serve as the foundation for teaching, research, and academic development. The university employs more than 1,156 academic staff members, including over 360 academic staff holding doctoral degrees (PhD and DSc), demonstrating strong academic capacity and research potential.

In addition, the university fosters an increasingly international academic environment, with 114 foreign professors and lecturers actively engaged in teaching and research activities, further strengthening its global outlook and academic quality.

The university’s growing international reputation is reflected in its recent achievements in the QS World University Rankings by Subject . In 2025, UzSWLU was ranked in the 251–300 band for Linguistics, and in 2026, it significantly improved its position to the 201–250 band. Furthermore, the university was ranked in the 301–350 band for Modern Languages, marking its first entry into this category. These results position UzSWLU as the leading university in Uzbekistan in the field of foreign languages and linguistics.
