The Victor Babes University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Victor Babes" Timisoara, hereinafter referred to as UMFVBT, is a public state higher education institution, with legal personality, non-profit, of public interest, independent of ideologies, religions and political doctrines, committed to the tradition of free thought, academic freedom, recognition of fundamental human rights and freedoms and the principle of supremacy of law. 

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Victor Babes" Timisoara was established by Royal Decree no. 660/22.12.1944 and Law no. 361/1945, published in the Official Gazette no. 102 of 4 June 1945. 

The mission of the "Victor Babeș" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timișoara is that of a higher education institution of advanced education and research.

The identity of the university is fixed by:

The “Victor Babeş” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara has four faculties, which in turn have several undergraduate and Master's degree programs: the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing, the Faculty of Dental Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy. Some of the study programs are taught in English and French (Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy). 

The doctoral degree programs are organized in 3 Doctoral Schools: Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy.

UMFVBT organizes university studies in the field of Health that are carried out according to the general and sectoral regulations of the European Union, respectively:

1. 6 years of study for a minimum of 5,500 hours of theoretical and practical medical activity for the field of Medicine in the Medicine and Dental Medicine study programs; 5 years for the Pharmacy study program; 4 years for a minimum of 4,600 hours of training in the General Nursing study programs and 3 years for other undergraduate study programs in the field of Health;
2. each academic year has 60 ECTS/SECT transferable study credits, totaling 180 transferable study credits for programs with a 3-year undergraduate degree, 240 transferable study credits for programs with a 4-year undergraduate degree, 300 transferable study credits for the Pharmacy program with a 5-year undergraduate degree and 360 transferable study credits for the Medicine, Dentistry programs with a 6-year undergraduate degree;
3. Master's degree studies have between 60 and 120 ECTS/SECT transferable study credits;
4. PhD studies last 4 years and have 240 ECTS/SECT transferable study credits, including one year of advanced doctoral training totaling 60 ECTS/SECT transferable study credits. Doctoral studies can only be organized at IOSUD - UMFVBT 
5. UMFVBT organizes, in addition to the forms of education above, the following postgraduate and professional training programs: residency, certification of the title of doctor/dentist/pharmacist specialist/primary and further training, specialization, as well as complementary studies in order to obtain certificates.

Currently, UMFVBT has over 8,000 students, and nearly 4,000 residents, from which almost 2,000 are foreigners. 

The university its own library, an IT study centre, a department of computer sciences, laboratories of medical informatics and several student hostels, providing accommodation for all our students, first-year students included. 

At present, the “Victor Babes” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Timisoara, with a past that recommends it as one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education, is also the warrant of further valuable results both in training future generations of physicians, pharmacists or dental surgeons, and in offering medical assistance to the community.

Research represents an essential part of our academic activity, the university increasingly becoming an integrant part of international research networks. Our university has an extensive research basis structured on research centres where research is focused on two well-defined directions: fundamental research and clinical research (immunohistology, first kidney transplant in Romania from cadaver, first in-vitro fertilization, cutaneous flaps in reconstructive surgery, animal-based experimental surgery). Both graduate and postgraduate students are encouraged to participate in research activities and to publish the results of their activity in well-known medical journals.
