Top Universities for Computer Science According to Employers

The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 features 601 of the world’s top computer science schools. You can view the full computer science rankings here.

The rankings are compiled using four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and impact of published work). You can find out more about the methodology used here.

In 10thplace this year for employer reputation is Bauman Moscow State Technical University, with an employer reputation indicator score of 88.5 out of 100. Bauman Moscow State Technical University places at 301-350 overall in the World University Rankings by Subject 2020 for computer science.

The university has partnerships with some of the largest Russian and foreign manufacturers of software and computer equipment, offering students a practical approach to learning and enabling them to build strong relationships with some of Russia’s top graduate employers.

9. CentraleSupélec

In ninth place in the ranking of the top computer science universities according to employers is CentraleSupélec, with a score of 90.2. CentraleSupélec also places 101-150 in the computer science subject rankings.

One of the most prestigious engineering and science schools in France, CentraleSupélec has a range of top industrial partners including: BNP Paribas, SAP, Alcatel, Bionatics, Bull, ENGIE, Renault and Thales.

8. Politecnico di Milano

Eighth in our list of the top computer science schools according to employers is Politecnico di Milano. The school has an employer reputation score of 90.7 and ranks 40thin the computer science subject rankings this year, after dropping three places. 

Politecnico di Milano prides itself on its strong relationships with surrounding companies and encourages students to get hands-on experience in the computer science industry.  

7. Ecole Polytechnique

Placing 51-100 in the computer science subject rankings this year, and seventh in the world for computer science according to employers, is Ecole Polytechnique, with an employer reputation score of 91.4.

Ecole Polytechnique has close partnerships with the corporate sector, and insider business knowledge is often integrated into the course’s teaching. These partnerships with businesses also allow students to be the first to hear about job openings. 

6. Lomonosov Moscow State University 

Lomonosov Moscow State University

In sixth place this year for computer science according to employers, with an employer reputation score of 92.3, is Lomonosov Moscow State University. The university falls three places in the computer science subject ranking this year to 51-100.

The largest university in Russia, Lomonosov Moscow State University is one of Russia’s oldest and most respected institutions. The university counts 11 Nobel Laureates and seven Fields Medal winners amongst its notable alumni.

5. Stanford University

Retaining its second-place position in the world subject rankings for computer science this year, and fifth in terms of employer reputation with a score of 95.2, is Stanford University. 

Stanford University is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, surrounded by some of the world’s top employers including Google, Hewlett-Packard, Yahoo and many more, who often hire Stanford University graduates. Stanford also has an exceptional career center, BEAM, which helps students with interview advice and internship applications.

4. University of Oxford

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford earns an impressive score of 96.6 this year in the employer reputation indicator, fourth in the list of the top universities to study computer science according to employers. Oxford places fifth worldwide for computer science, after rising one place in this year’s subject rankings.

Oxford University’s career advice service helps students and graduates with summer internships, CVs and cover letters, career choices, psychometric tests and careers fairs. 

3. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

 

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

First in the world for computer science this year is Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). MIT places third for employer reputation, with a score of 97.4 in this indicator.

 MIT’s Career Advising and Professional Development (CAPD) offer services such as career counselling, mock interviews, and help with writing CVs, cover letters and LinkedIn profiles. CAPD also have a reciprocity arrangement with the Harvard Office of Career Services, whereby students participate in career fairs and events at Harvard University and use their careers job board. 

2. University of Cambridge

University of Cambridge

Despite dropping one place in the overall computer science subject ranking this year, the University of Cambridge is in second place for employer reputation, with an incredible score of 97.6, narrowly beating MIT.

Careers services at the University of Cambridge offer a series of events and one-on-one meetings to help students connect with employers, find opportunities and job vacancies, and help to explore any career sectors students are considering.

The top university in the world according to employers is Harvard University, with a perfect score in the employer reputation indicator. Harvard University remains in seventh place in the world overall for computer science according to this year’s subject rankings.

The Office of Career Services at Harvard University aims to educate, advise and connect students to opportunities for summer and post-graduation, by helping students with CVs, internships and finding graduate jobs.
