Leiden University College (LUC) The Hague offers a three year bachelor (honours) degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences, taught in English, for a group of excellent and motivated (inter)national students.
At this residential college in the judicial capital of the world, a combination of studying, living and social activities is offered. The college offers students a provocative and broad education, and prepares them for leading position in the international community. The interdisciplinary program of the college is called ‘Global Challenges’ and focuses on Peace, Justice and Sustainability.
Studying Liberal Arts & Sciences in the City of Peace and Justice
LUC The Hague is a fully accredited part of Leiden University, the oldest and most prestigious university in the Netherlands (est. 1575), and it was awarded a Sirius grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education to acknowledge the excellence of its provision. LUC The Hague has welcomed its first students in September 2010.
The college, which is highly selective, is based on a Liberal Arts & Sciences ethos, but focuses on the kinds of themes for which the city of The Hague is well-known, as the ‘international city of peace and justice.’ Hence, LUC offers BAs and BScs in the field of ‘Global Challenges,’ with content oriented around questions in peace, justice and sustainability. Tuition from the international faculty is entirely in English, and students are able to follow ‘majors’ in areas such as ‘Global Justice‘, ‘Human Interaction’, ‘Sustainability’, ‘Global Politics’ and ‘International Development’.
Hence, students at LUC benefit from the depth of expertise at Leiden University, but they also find opportunities for internships and research in the various NGOs and other organizations that are based in The Hague. LUC’s goal is to provide a themed but interdisciplinary undergraduate experience of the highest quality, and hence to produce graduates who are capable of making innovative contributions to the various fields of global governance, both in the academy and beyond.
To assist students with their academic decisions, their adjustment to life as a student, and handling the various challenges that life throws at them, the LUC The Hague tutors are indispensable. These academics not only support students with the composition of their study program, but they also stimulate students to explore new areas and to follow their passion, while always ensuring that students combine depth and breadth in their program and meet the graduation requirements. LUC The Hague tutors are essential to the feeling of ‘community’ in the college, and they are always available to give help and advice to students, whether on academic issues or other things about college life.
College in the Heart of the City
The exclusive college building is situated at the prestigious Lange Voorhout in the historical heart of The Hague. This is close to the Dutch Houses of Parliament, the British, American and Swiss embassies, the Royal Theatre, The Hague Central Station, several parks and museums as well as the vibrant city center of The Hague.
In the first two years at LUC The Hague, students live in custom-built student housing facilities located close to The Hague’s international train station, Den Haag HS. The student housing provides a second focus for student life away from the academic hot-house of the college building. In the third (final) year of their study, the students can move to other housing facilities in The Hague.
