The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre accommodates diverse, creative, and playful worlds – those of music, theatre, and science. With over a century of expertise in music and theatre instruction, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre prides itself on a robust classical foundation while also thriving as a contemporary, forward-thinking university. The Academy operates from two strategic locations. The modern primary facility, located in the heart of Tallinn, boasts a concert hall with superb acoustics, a versatile black box theatre, a multimedia centre, and other state-of-the-art technological facilities. The Theatre Department is located in the midst of  historically significant Old Town.

Students at EAMT benefit from the vast knowledge and experience of outstanding instructors, artists, researchers, and specialists in their respective fields, assuring an engaging and immersive learning journey. The mission of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre is to sustain, develop and promote Estonian culture at the highest level of professionalism and excellence through music and theatre studies, creative practice  and research. Learning environment

The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre offers higher education across an array of music and theatre disciplines, at the  Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels.

Our  music Bachelor’s degree programmes offer training  in areas such as vocal and instrumental performance, conducting, composition, musicology, music education and recording arts. Additional specialisations are available in our Master’s programmes in chamber music performance, accompaniment, contemporary improvisation, and cultural management.

The theatre department provides comprehensive training for actors, directors and playwrights in both the classical and modern theatre practices. It also provides the Master's programme in Contemporary Physical Performance Making (CPPM), an advanced course designed for professional performers and theatre makers across disciplines.

EAMT’s doctoral programme is divided between Musicology, and Artistic Research in the fields of music and theatre.


EAMT also runs joint Master's programmes in music pedagogy  and cultural management with Tallinn University and the Estonian Business School, respectively, , as well as CoPeCo—a two-year joint  joint  program in Contemporary Performance and Composition, offering students an open platform for experimental artistic practice.

EAMT boasts an impressive roster of alumni, such as composers Arvo Pärt, Erkki-Sven Tüür and Helena Tulve, pianists Peep Lassmann and Kalle Randalu, and conductors Olari Elts, Tõnu Kaljuste, Eri Klas, Vello Pähn, Anu Tali, and Arvo Volmer. A significant majority of actors performing in Estonian theatres today are graduates of EAMT.

Bachelor programme in music with English as the study language offers the following main subjects (majors):

  • Classical music: piano, harpsichord, organ, violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, classical guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, euphonium, percussion, accordion, estonian harp, voice, choral conducting

  • Jazz music: voice, guitar, percussion, bass, keyboards, wind instruments, violin

  • Composition and music technology

The curriculum provides students, who already have a musical background, with an education of a high international standard, responding to the requirements of contemporary musical life. It also supports an open social and cultural learning environment that assists in mastering and applying the knowledge and skills both related to the field of specialisation and to other subjects described in the curriculum, creates conditions for developing human self-reflection and a holistic understanding of the world and develops communicative competence, sense of responsibility, leadership and collaboration skills of the students.

A Bachelor's Degree generally takes 3 years to complete. After completing it, you may take a 2-year Master's programme.

Master's programme in music with English as the study language offers the following main subjects (majors):

  • Classical music: piano, harpsichord, organ, violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, classical guitar, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, accordion, Estonian kannel, voice, choral conducting, orchestral conducting, wind orchestra conducting, chamber ensemble, accompaniment class, early music performance
  • Jazz music: voice, guitar, percussion, bass, keyboards, brass and woodwind instruments, violin
  • Contemporary improvisation
  • Composition and music technology
  • Contemporary performance and composition - joint programme with Kungl. Musikhögskolani Stockholm (Sweden), Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon (France), and Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (Germany) (admission in every two years)

In addition to curriculum in music, following curricula are available:

  • Contemporary Physical Performance Making

A Master's Degree generally takes 2 years to complete. After completing it, you may take a 4-year Doctoral programme.
