Mangalore University, established in 1980 and one of the
well-known State Public Universities caters to the higher educational needs of the
Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts of coastal Karnataka. It is a premier
educational institution in Karnataka and a major centre for advanced studies
and research with a good ranking at the national level. The University Campus (Mangalagangothri)
is located at a distance of 20 kms south-east of Mangalore city. The campus is
spread over an area of 353 acres and is on a high elevation overlooking the
Arabian Sea on the one side and the Western Ghats on the other. The main campus
houses 28 academic departments spread over the four faculties of Arts, Commerce,
Science and Technology, and Education. 36 Masters Programmes, of which MSc
Yogic Science, MSc Medical Physics, MEd, MPEd, BPEd, MBA and MCA are accredited
by AYUSH, AERB, NCTE and AICTE respectively, one UG Programme accredited by
NCTE and 31 Doctoral Programmes are on offer. In addition, P.G. Diploma
programmes in Yogic Science, German, French, GST and Skill-based Value Added
Courses are also on offer. Besides 154 affiliated colleges and 9 autonomous
colleges, the University has 4 constituent colleges.
The
central facilities include Computer Centre, University Science Instrumentation
Centre, Microtron Centre, Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental
Radioactivity, Centre for Application of Radioisotopes and Radiation
Technology, Promotion of University Research and Scientific Excellence
Laboratory, Incubation Centre, Language Lab, Health Centre, Hostels etc. The
campus also has guest houses, a shopping complex, Cafeterias, Banks, indoor
sports facilities. The campus is well-connected with public transport.
Buildings have solar power, solar water heaters, biogas plants and rainwater harvesting.
The campus is a ‘green’ campus, with botanical garden, landscaped parks and
outdoor learning points for students. It has been placed 4th in
the country and 179th globally in the UI Green Metric World University
Rankings-2024.
The University is honoured with the Karnataka Kreeda Poshak
Award by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Govt of Karnataka, in
recognition of promoting sports activities and for producing sports persons at national
and international level. A state-of-the-art Sports Physiology lab has been set
up. During 2024-25, 24 individual/team medals have been won by students at national-level
events. The campus has a large presence of international students hailing from
26 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe who have taken their admissions to UG,
PG and PhD programmes.
The University has taken steps to establish international
contacts through exchange of scholars and students with universities in USA,
UK, Finland, Japan, Norway, Germany, Spain and other countries. Several faculty
have been able to get fellowships and visit various foreign universities to carry
out their postdoctoral research. They have been on research assignments with
Fellowships from the Commonwealth, Inspire, DBT Ramalingaswami and Scholarships
awarded by Humboldt, Rotary, Agatha Harrison, Rockefeller and MacArthur
Foundations.
The University has ongoing research projects funded by UGC, ICSSR,
DST, SERB, DBT, VGST-Govt. of Karnataka, AICTE (CAFES) and Mahatma Gandhi
National Council for Rural Education, etc. The University has received major
grants for research from the MacArthur Foundation, Chicago; NBPGR,UGC,DST,Department of Ocean Development, Department of Electronics, Department of
Space, DBT,NPCIL,MoES,DAE besides the Govt. of Karnataka. The total grants
sanctioned for these projects during 2024-25 amounts to 2.05 Crores. The
University has achieved SCOPUS h-index of 91 as on November 2025.
Mangalore University has established 25 Endowment Chairs/Study
Centres in areas such as Banking, regional languages/literatures and cultures.
The Shri Narayan guru Chair, the Swami Vivekananda Study Centre, Nehru Study
Centre, The Kanakadasa Study Chair, the Yakshagana Study Centre, the
Tulu/Kodava/Konkani/Beary/Arebhashe/Kunda Kannada Study Centres, etc., have
been engaged in academic and research outreach in the community and have
contributed to value-based education offered by the University.
