In 1968, the University of Sulaimani was established in Sulaymaniyah City as one of the first universities in Kurdistan. It all started with three colleges: agriculture, science, and engineering. The Department of Physics has a long history within the University and began operating in 1969. The department began offering graduate studies in 1978. In 1981, with a political decision, the university was moved from Sulaymaniyah to Erbil and changed its name to Salahaddin University. Following the Kurdish Uprising of 1991 and the formation of the first Kurdish Parliament, the parliament decided to re-establish the University of Sulaimani in 1992, and the university began operations with three colleges of language, agriculture, and medicine. With the effort of several professors and faculty members’ suggestions to the head of the University and the Kurdistan Regional Government regarding the necessity and significance of the College of science to the University, the decision was made to open the departments of Mathematics and Geology. The Department of Physics was reopened and began receiving the first group of applicants to study physics in 1999.
