Agricultural production is one of the important lines for the development of the agricultural sector and the infrastructure of any country. Agriculture is one of the main economic activities that contribute to the development of the national wealth and national security. Agriculture and animal husbandry play major roles in the economy of countries, especially developing ones, since achieving economic development requires increasing production to meet the needs of society as well as having a sustainable amount of crop production. This increase is necessary to cope with the growth in population in the developing countries that are known as population explosion. For such countries, it is agriculture that supplies most of their food, clothing as well as a source of income. About two-thirds of the population depends on agriculture, in support of this, economists almost unanimously agree that agricultural development is a necessary condition for economic growth. It is logical that the achievement of agricultural development objectives is closely linked to agricultural education, its adequacy and efficiency. That is why, upon the reopening of the University of Sulaimani in 1992, the College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences was one of the colleges that opened its doors to receive undergraduate students on November 15, 1992, to be exact. Moreover, Kurdistan Region is basically classified as an agricultural country with a vast area of arable land and adequate water resources. More than 50% of the Iraqi population works in the agriculture sector. Both cattle breeding and farming have always been important sectors of the region’s national product. Given political stability, Kurdistan can produce enough food to assure the food security of the region; therefore, training specialists in the field of agriculture is of vital importance for the region.

The Department of Animal Science prepares its students to get job opportunities in the public or private sectors such as animal breeding, food and fiber production, nutrition, animal agribusiness, animal behavior, and welfare. A semester of study in the Animal Science Department includes the following information: genetics, microbiology, animal behavior, general disease, nutrition, physiology, and reproduction. Courses in support areas, such as genetics, soils, marketing, legal aspects, and the environment, are also offered. All of these courses are essential for entering an animal science profession.
