Dare to think, diverge and redefine with our Master of Music (MMus). Immersed in an environment which encourages exploration and nurtures pioneers, you will be supported to shape your artistic voice and develop the necessary skills to enter the music profession.
Key Features
There are five pathways you can choose from for our MMus, designed to prepare you for your professional life and/or further study:
Master of Music (Collaborative Piano)
If you are a first study keyboard player looking to work collaboratively in settings such as opera, musical theatre, dance, chamber music or early music, this master’s will provide you with the advanced training you require. You will specialise in one or more of the following areas:
- playing for opera and musical theatre
- orchestral piano / contemporary ensemble
- dance accompaniment
- basso continuo
Master of Music (Composition)
Our composition department provides a home for creatives who fearlessly push the boundaries of music. As a master’s student, you will develop your compositional technique and orchestration, explore sound and music, how classical traditions inform contemporary practices, and collaborate to bring your music to a variety of audiences.
Master of Music (Jazz Performance & Composition)
Our master’s in jazz performance and composition offers you advanced jazz training in creative, practice-based study within our wider artistic community. You enter with an instrumental jazz specialism for your continued development as an improviser, while you hone your own voice and creative direction as a jazz composer through individual and group classes, as well as collaborative performance opportunities.
As part of a small, select number of MMus students with jazz pathway you work closely with the high-level senior students of the BMus Jazz course in the practical elements e.g. small bands and performance projects. While you enjoy your own specialist weekly provision in jazz improv tuition you interact with Trinity Laban’s outstanding composition activities to make this a unique Jazz Masters in Performance and Composition.

Our master’s in performance offers you advanced and industry orientated training in your principal study. Through individual and group classes, and collaborative performance opportunities, you will continue to hone your artistic voice and engage varied audiences with your work.
Master of Music (Performer-Composer)
Increasingly, the music industry requires graduates with multiple skill sets and a fluid approach to music-making. Our Performer-Composer pathway integrates performance and composition, so that you can merge the two in your practice with confidence and artistic excellence.

Admission Requirements
Good 2:1 pass in a BMus (Hons)
Or an equivalent qualification such as a Performer’s Diploma (LTCL, LRAM, LRSM, ARCM etc.)
Other equivalent qualifications and/or relevant prior experience will be considered.
You must demonstrate through the application, audition and interview procedure the potential to carry out detailed investigations of topics in which you have a particular interest, and to communicate your ideas coherently and effectively to others. You will show the capability to deliver, at the end of the relevant programme, a series of performance, written and/or oral submissions, which will display critical awareness and the ability to communicate your ideas effectively.
