Are you an experienced creative professional looking for immersive periods of critical engagement in dance? The MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance in Context, is delivered in partnership with professional organisations Independent Dance (ID) and Siobhan Davies Studios (SDS).
You will be part of a multidisciplinary cohort in a context of relational and exploratory artistic enquiry. Working in dialogue with ID and SDS and associate artists, you will explore and interrogate body-based creativity in its many forms, taking account of it’s social, cultural, aesthetic and political contexts. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an artistic community that engages in and cultivates expanded approaches to dance research and artistic community development.
The programme offers varied routes of study between full time and part-time options making it ideal for professionals looking for a more bespoke pathway into post graduate study with elements of flexibility
We will support you to:
Reflect on your professional experience and its role in your ongoing learning.
Engage in intensive studio-based explorations, testing movement research ideas and dialoguing with significant dance or performance artists currently producing work in London.
Deepen your own practice as performers/makers/movement researchers and consider its relevance in wider socio-cultural contexts.
Develop your understanding of a range of research methodologies within the arts to pursue an area of artistic interest.

Admission Requirements
To study with us you’ll need:
- An appropriate first degree (or an equivalent qualification)
- or 5 years’ professional experience
Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements are subject to the Institution’s recognition of prior learning (RPL) process
Who is this course for?
The Dance Professional pathway is for experienced professionals in the fields of dance, performing arts or humanities, such as dancers, choreographers, visual artists, musicians or theatre-makers working with the body, academics, teachers and somatic practitioners.
MFA applicants should demonstrate their capacity to undertake self-directed research and propose a project that warrants the depth and breadth afforded by an extended time frame. The choice between an MA or an MFA programme of study will depend upon prior experience and future aspirations.
For MFA:
Applicants will also be required to submit an initial project proposal, outlining the following:
- The reasons they wish to carry out an independent project over one academic year
- Their suitability for extended independent research in the context of an MFA Creative Practice
- The nature of their intended research and a draft projected timeline with indicated outputs of research (which is understandably subject to change)
- Candidates are required to submit references or letter(s) of recommendation for acceptance
- Candidates are required to submit an essay(s) for acceptance
