If you were planning on starting university in 2020, you may be facing feelings of uncertainty in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Future students are concerned about their university courses starting as promised, and whether the shift to online learning will continue into the next academic year.\r\nIn this situation, it’s understandable if you feel that deferring your university place for another year and taking a ‘gap year’ before starting higher education is the right step for you. But how does deferring your university offer work in practice?\r\nDeferring your university offer in the US\r\nTaking a year out before starting college is less popular in the US than in the UK, but the ‘gap year’ is growing in popularity across the Atlantic. The process differs somewhat, in that you will have to apply for college without selecting a deferred entry option, get accepted, and confirm you will attend. Then, you must send a letter to the college’s dean of admissions to request deferred entry (preferably between mid-April and June), explaining your plans for your gap year. The admissions committee will then decide whether or not to grant your request.\r\nYou can also check with your college if there’s potential to gain college credit for your gap year activities – for example, if you enrol in any language classes abroad. This is rare, but it’s always worth considering.\r\nIf you’ve applied for financial aid or scholarships, it’s worth checking if these will still be valid when you’ve deferred entry for an academic year.
