Why Technology Can Save University Enrolment in Trying Times

The coronavirus pandemic is changing higher education. Universities across the globe have had to move all of their operations online quickly, and find new ways to encourage students to apply.

Our CEO Nunzio Quacquarelli spoke to Donatella Sciuto, Vice-Rector of Politecnico di Milano, to find out more.

“The quality of Politecnico stems from the quality of the people, the researchers, the teachers that we have here – but also the students,” said Vice-Rector Sciuto.

Before the pandemic, Italian Politecnico students were recruited through an in-person test, which has now been moved online and will be available for the first-time next month.

Vice-Rector Sciuto said: “Despite all the difficulties [of the Covid-19 outbreak], I would suggest prospective students make good use of their time. When things get hard people show their best, and that’s what we’ve seen here with our professors and technical staff.

“My advice is to take advantage of the means offered by technology – attending courses, enrolling in MOOCS.”

Vice-Rector Sciuto says Politecnico has seized all “the opportunities that technology can provide”, offering 50 MOOCS on its e-learning platform and setting up virtual classrooms, live streams with professors and online graduations for prospective and current students.

She said: “Online learning will become, I think, an integral part of course delivery. […] We’ll try and make the best of both worlds.

“I’m very positive in the fact that this generation can fully understand the importance of the moment we’re living and will come out of it stronger and with perspectives and aspirations for the future.”
