Chemical engineering combines a multi-disciplinary branch of engineering. It is involved in the research, design, development, construction, modification and operation of industrial processes and machinery that turn raw materials into valuable products. Like all engineers, chemical engineers combine natural and experimental sciences (such as chemistry and physics), along with life sciences (such as biology, microbiology and biochemistry) with the addition of mathematics and economics to develop new or adapt substances for a wide range of products. Depending on their specific role, chemical engineers might be researching and developing new products from trial to commercialization, managing processes from testing in a small plant to full industrial-scale manufacturing, developing improvements to product lines, modifying processing plants, and designing and commissioning new plants. Chemical engineers help in developing atomic science, polymers, paper, dyes, drugs, plastics, fertilizers, foods, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and electronics.
