Ismikhan Mammad Rahimov was born in 1925 in Baku. In 1943-1946s he studied at the Faculty of Foreign Languages at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute named after V.I.Lenin. While receiving a post-graduate degree he began to work as a teacher at the School of Foreign Languages in 1946. In 1948 he was sentenced to 25 years for his being an active member of anti - Soviet Youth Organization which had the aim to struggle for the independence of Azerbaijan. In May, 1955 he was pardoned, and in July, 1956, released from prison. He served as a teacher, senior lecturer and an associate professor at Azerbaijan University of Languages during 1956-2004s. In 1959 he defended his dissertation and obtained the degree of Candidate of Philological Sciences . More than 10 persons have obtained their degrees of Candidate of Science under his supervision. He served as Head of the Department of Translation Studies, and Dean of the School of English in different years. He is the author of many books including textbooks, manuals, dictionaries, scientific articles and translations. The book of "Practical Grammar of the English Language" published together with T. Hidayatzadeh in 1966 (revised version in 2001), “English – Azerbaijani” and “Azerbaijani – English” Dictionaries prepared with Z. Rahimova and Z. Mirjafarova are table books of specialists today.
