The institute “B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Institute of Science & Technology”, Chennai, India got established in the year 1984, as the “First Self-Financing Engineering Institution” in the State of Tamil Nadu and it was affiliated to the “University of Madras” and “Anna University”, Chennai. After serving 25 years of Quality Engineering Education, it has been upgraded as a “Deemed to be University”, under section-3 of the UGC Act 1956, by UGC & MHRD, Government of India. All the programmes offered by this institute are approved by UGC, AICTE, COA, PCI, BCI and other respective regulatory bodies of the Government of India.
It is one of the most sought after engineering institutions, because of the quality aspects of our education system. In the very first cycle of accreditation, NAAC has awarded “Crescent” with “A” Grade in the year 2014. All the eligible professional programmes of this institute have been accredited by NBA, under TIER I format (Washington Accord). Currently, 20 programmes have been accredited by NBA and 10 Programmes have been re-accredited and valid upto 2022/2023. The International Ranking agency for the universities, “QS” has awarded “Crescent” an Overall “4 STAR” Rating for the Overall performance and the maximum of “5 STARS” in 4 categories viz., Teaching-Learning, Employability, Inclusiveness and Infrastructure facilities. In addition, the "QS IGauge” has awarded “Crescent” a “Diamond Rating” for the outstanding performance. The THE (Times Higher Education) Impact Rankings has ranked Crescent as one of the "Top 200" Universities in the World. QS also awarded Crescent with a "QS IGauge E-Lead Certificate" with maximum Score. Crescent also positioned itself in 451-500 in the QS Asia Ranking and 81-85 in the QS India Ranking.
It is heartening to mention that in the very first National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India in the year 2016 and ranked Crescent “All India 54th Rank” among the Engineering Institutions in the Country. The Institute was ranked 100th under the category of University, 89th rank among Engineering Institutions in the Country and in the range of 75-100 in the B-School category, in the 2017 NIRF ranking. Similarly, Crescent was ranked at AIR 79 & AIR 131 in the Engineering institution category in 2018 & 2019 respectively. While the Institute aspires to be a leader in three dimensions of higher education viz., Teaching, Research and Consultancy & Extension, its long term objective is to become a “Research Intensive University”.
This Institute, amongst many other institutions, is the realization of the dream of Dr. B.S. Abdur Rahman, a great philanthropist, a reformer and a first-generation self-made entrepreneur, who established this institution as a “not for profit” institution to educationally uplift the socially-disadvantaged sections in general and Muslims in particular.
The Institute spans over 50.19 acre of sprawling, serene and evergreen campus abutting the Grand Southern Trunk Road and Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road with more than 17,00,000 sq feet built-up area. The academic buildings have adequate, well-ventilated classrooms fitted with LCD projectors, smart classrooms, various student laboratories, research labs, department seminar hall, common computer lab, faculty cabins, etc. In addition to the necessary academic and administrative buildings, a state of the art Convention Centre, Data Centre, Computerized Library including e-resources and e-journals, Transport facilities, Playgrounds, Swimming pool, Internet connections (both wired and Wi-Fi), Men &Women Hostels, Staff Quarters, Medical center, Book & Stationery shops, Bank and ATM facility, Yoga & Fitness center, RO water plant, Sewage Treatment Plant, Solid Waste Management facilities, Electrical Substation with HT connection, Rooftop Solar Power Plant, etc., are in place.
Currently, there are 22 departments grouped under 13 different Schools for 6600 students. These departments offer 27 Undergraduate, 19 Postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes. As a part of quality initiatives, Choice Based Credit System, Outcome Based Teaching Learning, Continuous Assessments are being practiced in all the UG & PG programmes. To enhance the effective teaching-learning and to produce skill-based employable graduates, various pedagogies including Project-Based Learning, Self-Learning, Industrial Internship, Industry Assisted Project Work and Peer Assisted learning are in place.
