Temple University is a comprehensive public research university with more than 37,000 students. The university was originally established in 1884 by Russell Conwell, whose vision for the institution was to provide educational opportunities for talented and motivated students, regardless of background or means. Since that time, Temple has only continued to evolve and grow, becoming one of the nation’s premier higher education institutions. It has a distinguished faculty in 17 schools and colleges, including schools of law, medicine, pharmacy, podiatry and dentistry, and a renowned Health Sciences Center. Temple is one of Pennsylvania’s three public research universities and has over $290 million in research expenditures. Students passionate about learning are attracted to Temple because of its variety of academic programs: More than 600 are offered, including 173 bachelor’s degree programs. The university provides all of the resources and opportunities of a large, world-class research institution and the individual attention of a small college—40% of classes offered have fewer than 20 students, with a 13-1 student-faculty ratio.


Over 12,000 students live on or near Main Campus, where they are a short walk from class; fitness facilities; food trucks; and the many cultural, sports and academic events that take place every day at Temple. Student fans can root for the Temple Owls sports teams, which compete in the NCAA Division I American Athletic Conference, as well as a variety of professional teams in Philadelphia. There are around 300 student organizations to check out, and Center City Philadelphia, a hub of history and city life, is a short subway ride from campus.

Research is central to both master’s and doctoral programs and provides faculty and students with opportunities to contribute to the development of new knowledge. Faculty members’ research and other creative activities stimulate intellectual development and prepare graduates for a wide range of careers. At Temple University, opportunity abounds for students and faculty to engage in research and creative work. Because research is such a high priority as an R1 research university, a stimulating, supportive environment is fostered.
