Civil engineers plan, design, and construct our nation’s physical infrastructure and take a leadership role in the responsible development and protection of our natural resources. Accordingly, the field of civil engineering encompasses several distinct disciplinary themes, including architectural engineering, construction engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering, among others. Civil engineers always have been at the forefront of such activities as designing and constructing bridges, buildings, water and wastewater treatment facilities, hydropower stations, storm drainage systems, airports, aerospace structures, and other public works. They also have taken a leadership role in eliminating the hazardous and solid wastes of society, responsibly developing surface and groundwater resources for beneficial use, managing environmental quality and minimizing the effects of pollutants, mitigating earthquake damage in large structures, and using artificial intelligence to improve the operation of transportation systems.
