for the South-East Region of Romania, a pole of academic excellence that
concentrates the elite human resource, specialized in the training of
professionals in numerous fields, of an entire area with national and

In 74 years of existence, the institution has
expanded and modernized, coagulating an academic community focused on achieving
performance in teaching and research and thus becoming a European-level
university based on both a modern and competitive didactic process –
collaborative with students at all levels, on fundamental and applied
scientific research, as well as on the excellent relationships it has developed
with the local and regional business environment and local community

The history of the Institution begins in 1948,
by the establishment of the Institute of Land Improvements, followed by the
Mechanical-Naval Institute, Technical Institute, Polytechnic Institute,
Pedagogical Institute, until becoming the University of Galati, by State
Council Decree, in 1974. During this period of time there were several study
programs, such is Naval Construction, or Food Industry and Fisheries
Technology, unique in Romania at that time.
UDJG encourages the development of a research
environment focused on technological progress and innovation, competitive both
nationally and internationally, able to strengthen this institution into a
center of excellence which aims to develop knowledge and technology transfer
with direct impact on scientific performance, visibility and quality of the
services to the economic and social community. It also promotes the correct
principles of deontology and ethics in scientific research for the training,
development and motivation of human resources.
International co-operation is a prerequisite
for ensuring the sustainability and quality of teaching and research at
university. The development of a network of international relations allows
“Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati to boost the mobility of its academic
staff and students and motivates them to share their knowledge with others.
Collaborative research efforts have been extensive and successful, the
scientists and students of the university frequently contribute to reputable
research journals and participate in many international research projects, as
well as hosting international conferences. UDJG is associate member of the
Agence Universitare de la Francophonie (AUF). Every year, AUF Romania launches
the call for the "Eugen Ionescu" Doctoral and Postdoctoral
Scholarship Program, in which doctoral students and post-doctoral students from
countries such as: Cameroon, Burkina Faso, the Coast of Ivory Coast,
Madagascar, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, apply for a three-month research
mobility at Romanian universities. UDJG was the only university in Romania that
hosted between 5 - 8 scholarship winners, every year, compared to other romanian
universities.

Universities Network, European Language Council, European University Foundation,
Eurasian Universities Union, International Association of Universities, European
University Association, Balkan Universities Association.

master's, doctorate level is organized within 14 faculties, in the fields of Arts
and Humanities, Clinical and Health through the Faculty of Medicine and
Pharmacy, which has also an extension in Enna, Italy, Physical Sciences, Life
Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Business and
Economics, Law. Crossborder Faculty also operates within an extension in Cahul,
Rep. Moldavia.
Every year, over 12,700 students, of which over
2,600 are international students, are enrolled in bachelor's, master's and
doctoral programs, while approx. 3000 students are enrolled in other forms of
training, such as medical residency, pedagogical training, postgraduate
training, professional conversion, and also preparatory year for foreign students.
Doctoral studies are organized in 4 fields: Basic
sciences and engineering, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Biomedical
Sciences, Social and human sciences.
