Training aims
The promotion of the biotechnology sector occupies an important place in the political agenda of Algeria. Biotechnology is recognized as one of the key priority sectors in the economic development of several countries as it is one of the sectors expected to contribute to business creation, innovation and sustainable economy..
In this context, enzyme engineering is one of the most promising tools in the development of products with economic interest. Enzymes play an important role due to their specific and efficient catalytic action. Nowadays, microbial enzymes are developed to meet various human needs, such as enzymatic conversion, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, production of drugs, removal of environmental pollutants, etc. Enzyme engineering is a discipline that uses the methods and techniques of genetic engineering and protein engineering to improve the characteristics of the enzymes produced.
The purpose of this speciality is to develop human resources in the field of enzymatic engineering. Students will be able to manipulate microorganisms in order to produce, purify and characterize enzymes with interesting properties for the industrial sector. This training is oriented towards industrial biotechnology with the aim of providing students with solid theoretical and practical knowledge that will allow them to work in different industries or even create their own companies.
Targeted Profiles and skills
At the end of this training, graduates of the Enzymatic Engineering specialty of the Higher School of Biological Sciences of Oran will be provided with a high-level theoretical and practical education. Students will have acquired the following skills:
Regional and national employability potential of graduates
One of the main objectives of the training in enzymatic engineering which is the first of its kind in Algeria is to prepare graduates for the work market. Thanks to the various skills developed, graduates will be able to join any biotechnology, agri-food, detergent company, etc.
Given their training, which is focused on the use of molecular biology techniques, graduates will also be able to integrate any sector requiring skills in genetics, molecular biology and bioinformatics, such as un iversities, hospitals, research laboratories (ex : Algerian Pasteur Institut, forensic science laboratories, etc.).
This education is also an academic training aimed at producing researchers for the various research centers and for doctoral training programs.
Having obtained the necessary knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship, graduates will also have the opportunity to create their own start-ups and businesses.

The preparatory cycle is open to distinguished baccalaureate degree holders or a recognized equivalent foreign diploma, according to conditions set by the Minister for Higher Education and Scientific Research. Selected students are subjected to a two-year undergraduate preparatory course within the school
The multidisciplinary training during the preparatory cycle allows students to acquire effective working methods as well as all the knowledge and skills expected from an engineer such as critical and analytical thinking, communication and redaction skills reapplied to a scientific background and several practical experimentations.
The preparatory cycle is based on various tutoring and assessing methods (courses, tutorials, practical work, conferences, seminars and personal work). The cycle benefits from the Higher School renovated infrastructure, specialized laboratories and qualified teaching staff.
The preparatory cycle also allows students to sit for many examinations to enter the second cycle of national Higher Schools. Moreover, students have the possibility to continue their studies after the preparatory classes at our Higher School in the engineering specialty of their choice.
ESSBO has three (03) agreed specializations:
Life Sciences and Medicine (1)
Preparatory Classes
After successfully passing the national contest, second cycle admitted students are oriented towards fields or specializations provided by ESSBO training or other Schools providing the same field of training, according to specific criteria which are essentially based on the contest grade, the wishes expressed by the student and the capacity of the host school.
The Second Cycle training will allow students to deepen the practical and theoretical knowledge on nucleic acids and proteins as well as secondary metabolites of different natures and origins. It allows introducing students to the manipulation and transformation of these molecules for different purposes such as the production of valuable metabolites of interest, the development of new diagnostic methods for animal or plant use, molecular identification of pathogens, GMOs, which can be achieved by producing kits for biochemistry, molecular biology and immunological diagnostics for didactic use, diagnosis and / or research.
