The Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders degree provides the academic basis for graduate study in audiology and speech-language pathology, as well as the skills and knowledge you would need to work as a paraprofessional in a range of settings. Courses in math, science, psychology, and American Sign Language provide a broad, rich perspective on both the physiological and social aspects of human communication-giving you the tools to make a difference in people’s lives as you chart an exciting future in a fast-growing field. Communication is central to all activity. Whether in the boardroom, electoral, advocacy, public relations or public affairs campaign, on social media, or with your family or friends, communication skills are instrumental to success. Crafting a message, and discovering the right words, and the best channel of delivery, can build issue awareness, resolve interpersonal conflicts, enhance leadership skills, and increase understanding of the rapidly changing complex world we all share. Few would dispute that communication is the most valuable force and asset within an ever changing global environment. Your major in Communication Studies will provide you with a broad-based understanding of the role that communication plays in a number of different professional paths, including healthcare advocacy, negotiation, human resource management, and consumer rights, among many others. While completing the core courses, you may choose to develop your own program of study, tailoring it to your career goals. Or, you may select to choose one of the three clusters/tracks of study: Negotiation and Dialogue, Culture and Performance, or Rhetoric and Argumentation. Those wishing to pursue this major are strongly encouraged to complete one of three internship opportunities/semesters extended by the Department: The Washington, D.C. Program, the Civic Engagement semester, or the Presidential Campaign semester.
