The Master of International Affairs (MIA) equips students with tools of international policymaking and the practical skills to devise sound policy proposals in a global multilevel system. Learning how to navigate this complex landscape of diverse actors and disciplines is at the heart of the programme.

Get a head start on your career

Career development and practical training are integrated into the MIA curriculum. In addition to taking two professional development workshops to develop your soft competencies, you will also complete a summer internship between your first and second year of study, as well as an international negotiation course. To help you meet future employers, the school has established relationships with a range of institutions such as ministries, international companies and NGOs.

Admission Requirements

You must have completed an undergraduate degree (bachelor's or equivalent) in order to be admitted. If you do not yet have your undergraduate degree at the time of application, please indicate when you will receive it on the online application form. You must complete all of your undergraduate academic course work and exams before 1 September 2023 in order to start your studies at the Hertie School.

Please upload the following required supporting documents to the online application portal:

    • Your current CV indicating your academic background, work experience and voluntary activities. Please do not include a photo on your CV.
    • A letter of motivation explaining your specific interest in the study programme and how it relates to your professional aspirations. Your letter should be 500-900 words.
    • Copies of official academic transcripts of all attended universities. Every transcript must include a transcript key (an explanation of the grading system). If not in English, we require a certified translation into English. Hard copies are not required until after acceptance into the programme.
    • A copy of an English proficiency certificate (for non-native speakers). For more detailed information about which tests and minimum scores are accepted, please consult our Frequently Asked Questions section. Please note that English test results can be provided after you submit your application to the Hertie School. You must send the certificate to the admissions team per e-mail at grad-admissions[at]hertie-school[dot]org. The deadline to submit English test results is 1 June 2023.

    Though the Hertie School is located in the heart of Berlin, Germany, all courses at are taught in English. If you are a non-native speaker of English or did not complete your entire undergraduate degree in English, we require you to submit proof of English proficiency (by 1 June 2022).     Work experience is not required for admission but can boost your application. In additional to full-time work experience, we also consider internships, volunteering, civic engagement and other extracurricular activities for an applicant's personal suitability to join the MIA programme.
    Yes, you can apply. You must have completed your degree by the time you start the MIA programme in September 2022.
    We understand that you are more than your grades and scores, and that grading systems are different around the world – even within the same university. We evaluate applicants holistically. That's why we don't indicate a minimum GPA for admission, nor do we require the GRE/GMAT (you may choose to submit your scores if you think they will boost your application). We do of course consider the strength of your academic records, which is weighted with 40% in our admissions process, alongside personal suitability (40%) and your letter of motivation (20%).
