Nutrition science is an expanding, interdisciplinary field that studies the role of diet in human health. The programme gives you in-depth knowledge of its scientific basis and research methods in the field. This knowledge prepares you for qualified work that relates to nutrition and also for continued doctoral education.

The Master's Programme in Nutrition Science gives a broad understanding of the role of diet in human health, and in-depth knowledge of the scientific basis and research methods in the field.

As a graduate, you will be prepared for various career paths in an expanding field. There has been a tremendous development in the field of nutrition in recent decades, resulting in a big demand in academic expertise who can interpret, communicate, and apply research findings in a balanced way. You will learn about the association between diet and health and the evidence behind diet and physical activity recommendations, while taking sustainability into consideration. You will get in-depth knowledge of molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying the impact of diet on the human body. Assessment methodology for dietary intake, physical activity and fitness, focusing on understanding the validity, applicability and evaluation of the results is also dealt with. You will be able to deepen your knowledge of the role of diet and physical activity in both prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), where also global perspectives are applied. Special focus will be on intervention studies and the use of the internet (eHealth) and mobile phone technology (mHealth). Studies also include the treatment of nutrition-related diseases on individual level. Professional development in popular science communication and entrepreneurship will prepare you for your career.

In the second year, you can choose to do a degree project comprising of 30, 45 or 60 credits, in your area of interest, within various fields of nutrition research. For example, the project can be molecular, physiological, clinical, epidemiological or public health-oriented. Depending on the length of the degree project, you can include up to 30 credits of elective courses and create your own educational profile.

Specific entry requirements

A bachelor's degree or a professional degree equivalent to a Swedish bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in biomedicine, cellular and molecular biology, pharmaceutics, medicine, nutrition or the equivalent. Check the  country specific requirements  for information on how to meet the requirement of a degree equivalent to at least 180 credits. Applicants who are in their final year may be  conditionally admitted.

Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary school course English 6/English B. You must prove that you meet the English language requirement either through an  internationally recognised test ,  previous university studies  or  upper secondary school studies.
