Over the past three decades, it has evolved into a prominent institution of higher learning and research, playing a vital role in producing skilled graduates and advancing knowledge in diverse fields. The university is situated in Gollamari, Khulna, alongside the scenic Moyur River and the Khulna-Chuknagar-Satkhira Road, which adds to its accessibility and appeal.

Currently, Khulna University houses 29 academic disciplines under 8 schools, which include the School of Science, Engineering and Technology; Life Sciences; Management and Business Administration; Social Science; Arts and Humanities; Law; Education; and Fine Arts. It offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs (MSc, MA, MPhil, PhD, and BFA), catering to the academic needs of thousands of students. One of the university's distinguishing features is its strict policy against student politics, which has resulted in a peaceful academic environment free from session delays a rarity in the public university landscape of Bangladesh.

The academic zone includes three main academic buildings and two central administrative complexes. The library provides ample reading space, computer facilities, and reprographic services to support students and researchers. The university also maintains specialized laboratories in fields such as biotechnology, remote sensing, GIS, coastal fisheries, and environmental science, many of which are involved in region-specific research addressing coastal and climate vulnerabilities.

Residential facilities at Khulna University include five halls of residence, three for male students and two for female students as well as staff quarters and a guest house. Additional amenities include cafeterias, a central mosque, recreation rooms, a gymnasium, medical center, bank branch, post office, transportation services, and ample open space for sports and cultural events. The campus environment is inclusive and vibrant, celebrating various cultural and religious festivals such as Pahela Baishakh, Diwali, and Saraswati Puja, which fosters a spirit of harmony and community among students and staff.

Khulna University is also known for its strong emphasis on research and innovation. These research activities are further strengthened by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), established in 2014 under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Project (HEQEP), which works to promote systematic academic review and improve teaching-learning quality.

The university's governance is guided by a team of experienced academic leaders. The current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, appointed in October 2024, has initiated several reforms, including introducing TA Policy, Adjunct Faculty Policy, •   Policy on Dissemination and Transfer of Research Findings and promoting sustainable development initiatives.
