On this course, you’ll explore the connection between exercise, health and performance, and learn how the same scientific principles used to support athletes can also be applied to healthcare and different populations. You’ll develop knowledge and practical skills in areas including exercise physiology, anatomy, biomechanics, metabolism, psychology and research methods.
At London Met, you’ll learn from a student-focused team of research-active lecturers with industry experience. You’ll have opportunities to work closely with teaching staff throughout your degree, with support available as you develop your academic, practical and professional skills.
This course is accredited by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (CASES).
Practical learning and specialist facilities
Practical learning is an important part of this course. You’ll have opportunities to apply what you learn in the classroom through laboratory-based activities and work with specialist equipment and facilities.
Popular practical activities include using our heat chamber and high-altitude simulation units, as well as hospital simulation facilities and specialist ward environments.
Our facilities include:
- Human performance testing facilities
- Climate chamber and high-altitude simulation units
- Hospital simulation facilities and specialist ward environments
- Respiratory gas analysers and blood analysis equipment
- DEXA, BodPod and bioelectrical impedance equipment for body composition analysis
- Electromyography, Vicon 3D motion analysis and Kistler force platforms in our biomechanics laboratories
Develop practical and industry-relevant skills
From the start of your degree, you’ll develop practical skills that can be applied in sport, exercise and healthcare settings. Your assessments are designed to help you build industry-relevant skills and apply your knowledge to practical situations.
At Levels 5 and 6, work-related learning gives you opportunities to work with athletes in our human performance testing facility. You’ll develop experience in exercise testing, providing feedback, communicating effectively and analysing data.
In your final year, you’ll complete a research project based on an area of sport and exercise science that interests you. You’ll have the opportunity to work on a live project, collect data from participants, analyse your findings and present your research.
Explore careers in sport, exercise and healthcare
Sport and exercise science has an increasingly important role in healthcare, with graduates applying their knowledge of exercise and physical activity to support health and help reduce the risk of long-term disease.
- Sport and exercise
- Healthcare and clinical exercise
- Nutrition
- Rehabilitation
- Education
- Human performance and athlete support
The broad range of topics covered on the course can also provide a foundation for further study and professional development.
