Mechanical Engineering is the profession that deals with the design, development, testing, manufacturing, and maintenance of machines, systems, devices, and components for the betterment of society. Mechanical engineers are involved with such areas as aerospace engineering, automatic control systems, automotive engineering, chemicals, oil and gas, computer aided design, manufacturing, energy conversion, engineering materials, environmental engineering, machine design, manufacturing processes, medicine, robotics, stress analysis, and thermal systems. Mechanical engineers may deal with hardware as small as a microchip or as large as an aircraft carrier. They may work from the bottom of the ocean up to the weightless environment of interplanetary space. Of all the engineering disciplines, mechanical engineering is the most diversified and offers the largest selection of career paths. If you can see it or touch it, a mechanical engineer probably helped to create it. Program Educational Objectives Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Program are expected within a few years of graduation to have: Established themselves as practicing professionals or engaged in advanced study in an engineering or related area. Demonstrated their ability to work successfully as a member of a professional team and function effectively as responsible professionals. The curriculum includes courses featuring a wide variety of both technical and non-technical topics. Instruction is delivered in a variety of modes designed to assure that upon graduation, each student has the ability to become a successful mechanical engineer.
