The Dual Major in Humanistic Studies is for students who seek a deeper engagement with the Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum at MICA.
All MICA students have Liberal Arts requirements, but Dual Majors enhance this curriculum by simultaneously majoring in a studio discipline and in Humanistic Studies, with both majors recognized on the BFA Degree transcript. Apart from the special Majors Seminar, On Being Human, taken in one of the first two years, the Major’s Humanistic Studies course of study is largely student-generated from the array of HMST course offerings in consultation with faculty mentors, to create an enriched research and writing practice in accordance with student interests. The Major culminates in a Thesis in the Senior Year that can stand alone, or can complement and amplify a student’s studio thesis project. Past student theses have included Tricketerology: Art, Ecology and Religion, Planting Seeds, Bombing Banks: A Neoliberal Dream State in Modern Day Iraq, and g.url: Girls, Gender Discourse, and How the Internet is Reestablishing Culture.
