The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, established in 1964 as the Regional Engineering College (REC) Tiruchirappalli, was founded through a collaboration between the
Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu under the affiliation of the University of Madras. In 2003, the institute was granted deemed university status with the approval of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the Government of India. In the same year, it was designated as a National Institute of
