Archaeological Sciences

The name of the degree program conveys a direct and strongly distinctive message to students within the field of study (L-1 Cultural Heritage). While open to fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration, the program maintains a strong archaeological focus, offering a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of scientific research in this field. The program aims to provide a foundational education focused on the discipline's methodological foundations: from the ability to classify, understand, and interpret artifacts, to the critical analysis of large monumental complexes, and to an understanding of the processes of development and change within cultural systems.

The training path is ideally divided into two phases:

Phase One (Basic Preparation): This phase aims to provide a solid shared education. Appropriate weight is given not only to traditional historical and archaeological topics, but also to general disciplines. This shared foundation allows students to consciously identify their next steps, reflecting their aptitudes and preferences. This approach benefits from the extraordinary scientific depth and breadth of expertise of the faculty, unique in the Italian academic landscape.

Second phase (In-depth study and practical skills): It is oriented towards the acquisition of specific methodologies associated with application phases (from field research to laboratory exercises) and is characterized by the exceptional breadth of the geographical areas investigated, which involve the entire globe, combining traditional teaching with innovative disciplines for the national educational offering.

The two-curricula structure—"Prehistoric, Classical, and Medieval Archaeology" and "Oriental Archaeology"—allows for an initial, comprehensive study, exploring the range of skills required in different chronological and geographical areas while simultaneously strengthening the skills required by the world of work.

The particularly broad and structured educational offering promotes methodological preparation that fosters familiarity with archaeological and art-historical problems, providing the appropriate tools to address them from a comparative, diachronic, and global perspective on civilizations, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The connecting thread of the entire program is represented by practical and field activities (archaeological excavations, surface surveys, laboratories on finds, use of traditional systems and advanced digital technologies for surveying). These activities allow for the ongoing application of acquired skills and represent a crucial moment for assessing the effectiveness of learning.
