Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM), founded in 1927, is the first independent music institution of higher education in China and one of the first universities supported by the “Double First-Class” initiative since 2017. Through its 93 years of history, the SHCM has nourished a number of excellent Chinese musicians and achieved tremendous musical accomplishments with distinctive Chinese-style compositions such as piano music Buffalo Boy’s Flute (by He Luting) and violin concerto Butterfly Lovers (by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang).
The SHCM now owns two campuses with a combined area of about 87,333 m2. At present, it has 2,493 full-time students, including 1,718 undergraduates, 643 master’s students and 132 PhD students, together with another 79 international students from about 20 countries and regions. The total number of faculty members is 534, among which 333 are full-time teachers. The SHCM has developed a complete and integral education system covering elementary, secondary and higher education through its undergraduate and graduate (master and doctorate) programs, and two postdoctoral mobile research stations.
