Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural
University (SAU), established in 1938 as Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI)
and transformed into university in 2001, was first founded by Sher-e-Bangla
A.K. Fazlul Huq – the Chief Minister of undivided Bengal. Establishment of this agricultural academia
had a historic perspective of famine in 1920s under British regime that caused
life of thousands and now marked as a significant milestone in the development
of agricultural transformation in Bangladesh. Located in Dhaka, SAU spans 86.92 acres, providing a peaceful, green

At present the university has a diverse student body of
5,358, with 50% female students. It
has 361 highly qualified faculty members of which 156 are holding PhD from home
and abroad, supported by 295 officers and 324 staffs. SAU’s academic community
is dedicated to delivering high-quality education and research in agricultural sciences.
The university has four faculties, encompassing 35 specialized departments, and
includes three specialized institutes namely, Seed Technology, Food Safety, and
Climate Smart Agriculture. SAU has four
faculties viz. Agriculture, Agribusiness and Management, Animal Science &
Veterinary Medicine, and Fisheries—offer BS, MS and PhD specialized programs in
sustainable farming, agricultural economics, veterinary science, and fisheries
management. These programs provide theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and
research experience, preparing graduates to address global challenges like food
security, climate change, and sustainable agriculture. SAU provides safe, on-campus accommodation for
both male and female students, with seven dormitories. SAU also offers over 24
extracurricular clubs, including cultural, debating, and career clubs.

advancing research is evident in its expanding research portfolio. SAURES
received nearly 31.19 crore BDT in government funding for research last year. It offers
state-of-the-art lab facilities for research and practical learning, with
around 74 labs equipped with modern tools in areas like soil science, plant
pathology, biotechnology, aquaculture, veterinary science, biomedicine, data
mining, greenhouse and agricultural engineering. These labs support advanced
research and hands-on learning in various agricultural fields. The veterinary
teaching hospital provides medical care for animals while offering students
hands-on experience in veterinary science and animal healthcare. The university continues to push the boundaries of
agricultural science through collaborative partnerships with leading
institutions worldwide. Through its outreach programs, 23 crop varieties and 21
agricultural technologies have been introduced, benefiting over 500 rural
farmers, 30-40% of whom are female, promoting women’s empowerment in
agriculture. SAU outreach program trainings across Bangladesh is helping
farmers to improve harvests and strengthen their role in agricultural
development.

staff in areas like teaching, research, administration, and technology to
enhance academic quality. SAU library, equipped with RFID technology, offers
45,594 hard-copy books, and provides access to 240,400 e-books, 138 journal
titles, and 69,636 e-journals. It also hosts an Institutional Repository with
research materials, aiding bachelor, MS, PhD students in their research.
