Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) is Germany’s resource-oriented university and one of the world’s oldest universities in the field of mining and geosciences. Founded in 1765, the university’s teaching and research activities have historically been aligned along the raw materials value chain. Today, this encompasses exploration, extraction, processing, recycling and the sustainable use of natural resources.

The university’s academic profile is structured around the closely interlinked fields of geosciences, materials science, energy, environmental sciences and economics, which together address challenges related to responsible resource use. Sustainability has long been a guiding principle of the university’s academic work, rooted in the early concept formulated by Hans Carl von Carlowitz in Freiberg.
