Biomedical Engineering is the program that combines the knowledge of medical and biological sciences with the principles of engineering to propose solutions that help to meet and satisfy the needs of people in the health sector.

At UPC, we train Biomedical Engineering professionals through a comprehensive education, which includes knowledge in the following areas:

  • Signal and Image Processing, which focuses on the development of medical devices and software to enable optimal diagnosis through medical signals and images. As examples of equipment that use these technologies we have ultrasound scanners, electrocardiographs, tomographs, radiographers, among others.
  • Biotechnology, which allow the study and manipulate of cells to create pharmaceutical products to cure or treat some type of disease. This field includes Bioinformatics, which uses software design combined with artificial intelligence, statistics and Big Data to analyze the biological information obtained by biotechnological equipment in order to detect genetic diseases, new viruses, mutations, among others.
  • Biomechanics, which studies the movement of the body, the forces that interact in it and the effects they produce. Its purpose is to benefit people whose mobility is compromised by occupational, sports and natural injuries, among others. It also focuses on the development of prosthetic limbs and the use of technology in physical rehabilitation processes.
  • Clinical Engineering, which is the area that promotes the management of medical technology through different processes such as the installation, operation and maintenance of equipment, software and medical devices. The field of Clinical Engineering also includes Telemedicine as an alternative for care, analysis and monitoring of patients from a distance.
