Many patients who come to the clinic to receive dental treatment are elderly, have systemic diseases that require exact knowledge of them and their implications and interactions in the dental area, cardiovascular, immunological, endocrine, and metabolic pathologies that have to be known by the dentist to carry out the treatments correctly, safely for both the patient and the dentist. Likewise, people with some type of disability present complex challenges that are difficult to solve for the profession. Added to this is the appearance of oral lesions secondary to taking certain medications, interactions between them or as oral manifestations of underlying systemic diseases. We consider all of them special patients. Currently, academic training in the case of the degree is limited to merely theoretical concepts and clinical practice limited to elderly people with low risk. Patients with significant medical compromise, with mental disabilities and non-cooperators generate a pathology that the undergraduate student, given his or her inexperience, is not able to handle with ease. The techniques, materials and procedures in these patients are substantially different and generate possibilities to promote research which are not addressed in conventional programs. The recommendations of the Council of European Dentist in its Directive of 19 Nov 2010 recommend the inclusion of Gerodontology in the study plans of Universities and agree with the European College of Gerodontology in the need to promote postgraduate training as well as lines of research in The matter. Thus, the shortage of professionals trained in this area and the demand from specialized centers and hospitals can only be met from the perspective of Masters with these characteristics.
