Your faculty mentors will challenge you to explore atmospheric theories, concepts and processes from new perspectives. You’ll engage in research that addresses key questions in the field, such as how extreme weather events develop and evolve in mesoscale systems, how to improve tropical storm predictions, how cloud chemistry informs our understanding of atmospheric composition and impacts on our environment, and how physical processes shape interactions between the stratosphere and troposphere. You’ll also investigate the mechanisms behind intra- and sub-seasonal variability to improve prediction of weather patterns weeks in advance.
At UAlbany you'll have access to the New York State Mesonet — a network of over 120 advanced weather observation stations across the state — along with a state-of-the-art map room for data visualization and the Albany National Weather Service office located right on campus. With access to advanced computing resources, you'll apply modern machine-learning data analysis methods in your research.
You'll be prepared for a career in research, forecasting and education across public and private sectors. Our location in the state capital offers excellent opportunities for internships and employment with state agencies and industries seeking expertise in atmospheric science and environmental problem-solving.
